Exploring the tunnels and caves of Arras

Writer's picture: History teamHistory team

Undaunted, we went down 30 metres into the earth via a lift shaft, with WW1 hard hats, to explore the caves and tunnels of Arras. Soldiers dug a network of tunnels under the city and joined them up with the existing ancient tunnels and quarries from hundreds of years before. Accommodation in the underground city was available for the soldiers to live and sleep in, , there was a large hospital for treating the wounded in a labyrinth of rooms with enough space to fit 700 beds and operating theatres. Incredible.
